Annual Meeting of the SBTC

At the start of this week I was in Corpus Christi for the annual meeting of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention. We are a network of more than 2,000 local churches in Texas, with a common theological confession (see the Baptist Faith and Message 2000) who pool money and effort to reach our state and the world. Namely, we send 10% of NEHBC's budget receipts to the SBTC--that is a lot of money. 45% stays in state and 55% goes to the nation network called the Southern Baptist Convention.

The annual meeting of the SBTC is for the convention employees (headquarters are in Grapevine) to report to the churches what they did with our money and what we did for the Kingdom. SBTC pastors and other leaders attend on behalf of their church to hear the report. If any NEHBCers want to attend one year, just let me know.

With annual receipts passing $25 million, our 13 year old convention is doing very well. We had a fantastic year of Kingdom work in 09-10. 89% of that money goes to church planting, training pastors and church leaders, and helping struggling churches. By belonging to the SBTC, NEHBC is helping to reach Texas through local churches. I'm grateful to God for the SBTC.

The craziest part of the convention was when I got voted by my fellow pastors to preach the convention sermon at the 2011 annual meeting in Arlington. I'm humbled and I'm pumped!
