The primary roles of the pastor are preaching and vision casting. The preaching feeds the sheep so they can develop and grow and protects the sheep by helping them clearly identify dangers to their well being. The vision casting helps the sheep know the longterm plans for the flock--both that there is one and what they are achieving together. Preaching provides nourishment and protection; vision provides purpose and identity.
Therefore, in the life of the flock, the regular and systematic preaching of God's Word should be interrupted from time to time by seasons of vision casting. It is important to take time to look back on where we've come and look ahead to where we are going. The sheep should want and expect a healthy balance of preaching and vision casting from their shepherd.
This Sunday, we will begin a four Sunday, 21 day season of vision casting. We will look back down the trail from where we have come over the last two years and look ahead to the next two to four. I am praying it will be a season of renewal and refocus for our flock. I am praying NEHBCers receive the season of vision casting and that we have the eyes to see how important it is to the life of our church.
