big church debut

(You can see Cassidy in this picture with Grandpa taken last month.)

Tomorrow, Cassidy is making her debut in "big church". She will turn 3 years old in a couple of weeks. We are excited for her and nervous for us.

We are excited for her: She's been asking to come to big church with us for a while and Colton and Campbell started in big church at 3 and 2 respectively, so we are going for it. Last Sunday, we brought Cassidy to the annual "big church" training for the incoming 4 year olds and not only did she sit through it--it made her want to attend "big church" even more so look out 10am service tomorrow! We also realize that there is no better way for a child to learn and understand corporate worship than to observe dad and mom and practice all the elements of corporate worship with them. Every other approach to teaching a child corporate worship is far inferior. Of course, this approach is labor intensive--the child must be prepped ahead of time by the parents, the parents must forgo being able to pay complete attention to the service in favor of training up their child in corporate worship, the parent must be willing to risk everyone staring at them when their child inevitably has a meltdown, and the parent must put in the effort to have things for their child to do in worship.

We are nervous for us: a 6, 5, and 2 year old in corporate worship is challenge enough on its own. A 6, 5, and 2 year old in corporate worship with a single parent is radical...welcome to Nicole's world. During the sermon time she sits alone with the kids. By the time I've made my way around saying hello to people, the worship service is well on it's way. I'm usually on stage for the missions moment. On a normal Sunday, I get to sit with my family in corporate worship for two songs--about 7 minutes. I don't know how Nicole does it week in and week out; I leave the house by 5:45 am on Sunday mornings and somehow she gets it all done without losing her joy. She is simply an amazing wife and mother who loves God's call on her life and trusts completely in His promise to equip her to live out her call. Her commitment to her call as a wife and mother is what inspires me in my call as a pastor. Tomorrow, we'll find out what it's like to sit in worship with a 6, 5, and 2 year old!

A new adventure begins for our family tomorrow!
