This morning I visited our church member who is serving time in Plane State Jail. She is in great spirits and we had a really good visit. She goes before the parole board next month and could very well get paroled. Nonetheless, we had a good discussion about biblical justice and the mercy of God. Our talk surrounded Genesis 3. When Adam and Eve sinned against God, God brought justice. He evicted them from the garden and pronounced curses/punishment. Yet, in the text it says that in the midst of the justice, God made them clothes to wear and protected them. The passage is an amazing picture of God's justice and grace. They are not mutually exclusive concepts--but work together in perfect tandem. With our church member, there must be justice for her sin, but God's grace can and will be sufficient in the midst of justice. If the parole board lets her out, praise God. If she must serve a longer sentence, God's will be done. We will not pray against justice and we will anticipate His grace no matter what.
I reassured her we are saving her seat for her at NEHBC.
