Today, I was in my neighborhood pool waiting at the bottom of a slide for my three year old when I struck up a conversation with the lifeguard, a rising high school senior. Turns out she comes to NEHBC's worship services. Despite the embarassment of not recognizing her, I found her story of how she got to NEHBC caught my attention.
She went to a local church with her parents for many years. Then a friend invited her to a worship service at NEHBC. To use her words, she was very surprised at the "meatiness of my sermon". She didn't like it and had no plans to return. But, that week she thought about my sermon and realized she hadn't contemplated a sermon the week after...ever. Which led her to realize, again to use her words, she was only getting "milk" at her church and the reason she didn't like the "meat you served up was because I was used to milk". So she returned to NEHBC and again and again.
I was so impressed with this 17 year old that she is processing the need to grow in God's Word, despite the effort and work required to do so. Her willingness to push herself to get more into God's Word is something every believer is supposed to do. Christianity is not about hype, feelings, and trendiness, it is grounded in the Word of God. Mature believers are thinking believers. Psalm 1.
